But making this classic dip at home takes it to a new level. The flavor is fresh, savory, rich and tangy: ideal for drowning salty potato chips or crunchy veggies. Here’s what to know about this classic chip dip.

Where did French onion dip come from?

French onion dip is a classic American dip invented in 1954, made with sour cream base, minced onion and other seasonings. The original chef or cook (unknown) combined sour cream and a packet of instant French onion soup mix to make this famous dip, hence the name. It caught on and has been a popular dip for chips since the 1960’s.

And as you might have guessed: no, it’s not French! It simply takes its name from the soup mix.

Modern French onion dip recipes evolved outside of the instant soup, but there’s no standard. Some home cooks like to make it with caramelized onions, but store-bought versions often include some type of fresh or dried onion, garlic, and savory seasonings like Worcestershire sauce.

For our spin on the classic dip, we took a tub of store-bought French onion dip and replicated the flavor using spices, seasonings and chives. (Because really, who wants to spend 45 minutes caramelizing onions for this dip? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dried chopped onion
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Fresh chives
  • Salt and pepper

For creamy dips like the classic veggie dip, it’s our preference to use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Why? Greek yogurt has some great health benefits: it’s packed with protein, has probiotics for gut health, and has only 30% of the calories as the same amount of sour cream. The flavor is tangy and lighter than sour cream, and it makes for a great dip combined with a little mayonnaise (for richness and savory flavor).

Of course, you can use sour cream if you like! The dip will taste richer. If desired, you can replace the entire quantity of Greek yogurt and mayo with sour cream (2 cups), or just substitute the yogurt and keep the mayonnaise.

This French onion dip holds up well in the refrigerator. Make it and serve it immediately, or you can make ahead and eat off of it all week. It has best flavor up for 5 days after making, but you can stretch this to up to 10 days if desired. Make sure to give it a stir before serving!

How to serve French onion dip

The very best way to serve French onion dip? With potato chips. This classic chip dip is just not right with tortilla chips or crackers. Potato chips all the way! Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups (18 ounces) full fat Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 ½ tablespoons dried chopped onion*
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (or finely minced green onion top)
  • Fresh ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together. Serve immediately or refrigerate until serving. Last up at least days refrigerated (stir before serving).

*Look for these dehydrated chopped onions in the spice aisle.
