It’s minty, icy, and outrageously refreshing: like someone amped up the dial on the mint volume. It’s the perfect summer drink for sipping on the patio!

Fresh mint

Why we love this recipe

When the summer heat is is at sky high levels, here’s a drink that will cool you to your core: the frozen Mojito! The classic Mojito is one of our top cocktails of all time, and as two certified mixologists we’ve made almost every type of fruity mojito recipe.

This frozen spin makes our heads turn! It’s icy and intensely minty, and it’s so simple to whip up in a blender. It immediately jumped to the top of our must-make frozen alcoholic drinks!

Ingredients in a frozen mojito

This frozen mojito is an icy spin on the Mojito, a classic cocktail invented in Havana, Cuba. Some say the origins of this drink go all the way back to the 1500’s with an early combination of lime, sugar, and rum used as medicine. But the modern version of became popular in the 1930’s.

The Frozen Mojito uses all the same ingredients as a classic Mojito, except it substitutes ice for soda water. Instead of diluting the drink with bubbles, it turns it into a frozen slushie. Here’s what you’ll need for a Frozen Mojito:

Mint

How to make a frozen Mojito

The best part about this frozen Mojito? It requires no advanced planning whatsoever. You can make it on the spot! This is unique because many frozen cocktails need time to freeze over night, like with this Frozen Margarita or Frozen Sangria. But with the Mojito, you can whip one up right away. Here’s what to do:

  • Add ½ cup white rum, ¼ cup each lime juice and simple syrup, 1 handful mint leaves, and 2 cups ice to a blender.
  • Blend until smooth! Serve immediately garnished with a lime wedge.

The glasses to use

You can use many different shapes of glasses for serving a Frozen Mojito. Here we served it in a non-standard presentation with a stemmed cocktail glass, just for fun! A Mojito is often served in a low-ball or high-ball glass, so that works as well. Another option is a Hurricane glass, which is often used for tropical drinks.

Tip: frozen Mojitos for a crowd

One of the great things about blender cocktails is that they’re easy to make multiple servings. Just make double the recipe for 4 servings, or quadruple it for 8. Use the 2x button in the recipe below for an easy way to double the ingredients.

Love frozen cocktails? This frozen mojito is one of our favorites, but there are lots more fun ideas to try. Here are a few of our top frozen alcoholic drinks:

Frequently asked questions

How is a frozen mojito different from a regular mojito?

The main difference is the texture. A regular mojito is a shaken drink with a liquid consistency, while a frozen mojito is blended with ice to create a frozen, slushy texture.

Can I use a sugar substitute?

Yes, you can use a sugar substitute like stevia or agave nectar instead of simple syrup. We don’t recommend honey or maple syrup, since they have a very strong flavor.

How can I adjust the sweetness of my frozen mojito?

You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar (or sugar substitute) to taste.

Easy Frozen Sangria https://www.acouplecooks.com/easy-frozen-sangria/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/easy-frozen-sangria/#comments Thu, 20 Jun 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=39880 This easy frozen sangria recipe is sure to be a favorite: it’s wine-forward and just sweet enough, with a hint of citrus.

Frozen sangria

In college I studied abroad in Madrid and my experiences there have stuck with me to this day: eating my first paella, inhaling patatas bravas in tapas bars, and sipping creamy cafe con leche.

Of course, another great memory is glasses of fruity red sangria! Here’s a spin on the classic that’s a fun spin on the traditional drink: this frozen sangria recipe. It’s icy and refreshing, citrusy and red-wine forward: really, an ideal summer drink for any occasion!

“OMG! The sangria is amazing. Love that the added sugar is honey and not actual sugar. So pleased. I love sangria, and order it anywhere I go. I have never have a frozen one – this will be a hit.” -Micah

Wait, frozen sangria?

Sangría is a traditional wine punch that originates from Spain. A classic sangria is made with red wine and chopped fruit, and often orange juice or brandy. There are lots of sangria variations as well (we’ve made peach sangria, white sangria, strawberry sangria, and apple cider sangria).

Frozen sangria is a variation on sangria that’s frozen, like a slushie. Of course, it’s not an authentic Spanish drink: it’s more of an American invention honoring the Spanish alcoholic punch. But the method makes for a festive frozen alcoholic drink that tastes like sangria and great for parties!

Like our frozen margarita and frozen mojito, we’ve added this one to our summer party repertoire and it’s here to stay.

Cocktails with orange

How to make this frozen sangria recipe

Frozen sangria is not authentic, so the method is quite different from sangria itself! It’s less like making sangria and more like making a wine smoothie.

Because Alex and I are obsessed with clever ways to make recipes easy to make, Alex devised a solution for making this sangria taste tangy without watering down the flavor with ice. This recipe calls for frozen clementine oranges instead of ice. This brings in a tart, citrus flavor and smooth texture without having to water down the frozen sangria with ice. Here’s what to do:

  1. Peel and section the clementine oranges, then freeze them overnight.
  2. The day of serving, blend together frozen mixed berries with the oranges, red wine, and honey. Serve!

While frozen sangria is not traditionally Spanish, we have several recipes that are inspired by my time in Spain! Try these recipes:

Dietary notes

This frozen sangria recipe is vegetarian,  gluten-free, and naturally sweet (no refined sugar). For vegan, use maple syrup.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wine to use for frozen sangria?

Traditionally, Spanish red wines like Garnacha or Tempranillo are used, but you can experiment! Fruity reds like Pinot Noir or Beaujolais work well too.

Can I make frozen sangria ahead of time?

Don’t freeze overnight! We recommend making a batch right before you plan to serve it.

What are the best garnishes for frozen sangria?

Fresh fruit slices, berries, mint sprigs, and even edible flowers make beautiful and tasty garnishes.

Espresso Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/espresso-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/espresso-martini/#comments Wed, 05 Jun 2024 13:43:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=73743 The Espresso Martini is a classic cocktail made with coffee, Kahlua, and vodka. Smooth and creamy, it’s the perfect pick-me-up for any occasion!

Espresso Martini in cocktail glass topped with 3 coffee beans

Oh hello, Espresso Martini. This 1980’s cocktail vaulted into popularity in 2021, and it’s easy to see why. Bittersweet coffee pairs perfectly with the rich sweetness of Kahlua—add vodka and it makes a sophisticated drink that’s cool, frothy, and bittersweet!

Why we love this recipe: Alex and I are cocktail experts with over 300 cocktail recipes in our library, and we’re homemade coffee drink enthusiasts. As you might expect, this combination of both is a fast favorite over here. We love mixing up this frothy, cool, bittersweet drink for friends and family—or ourselves, for a fun at-home date night!

Espresso Martini ingredients

The Espresso Martini is a vodka martini made with coffee, known for its rich flavor and frothy topping. It was invented in 1983 by bartender Dick Bradsell in London for a customer who asked for a drink to wake her up. Apparently the coffee machine was right next to the drink station, and the Espresso Martini was born!

There are several variations on what a Espresso Martini recipe looks like. The original version had two types of coffee liqueur and simple syrup. Today, it really varies based on on the bartender. Per the International Bartender Association’s list of IBA official cocktails, the Espresso Martini ingredients are:

  • Vodka
  • Kahlua or coffee liqueur, like Tia Maria or Sheridan
  • Espresso or double strength coffee or cold brew concentrate
  • Simple syrup

How to make an Espresso Martini

The only part about an Espresso Martini that takes some time is making the coffee. Otherwise, it’s a simple formula of shake and strain. Here’s how to make an espresso martini:

Ristretto vs long shot

Step 1: Make the espresso using an espresso maker (or French Press). Or, use 2 tablespoons double strength coffee or cold brew concentrate. Place the coffee in the freezer until it is room temperature.

Espresso Martini ingredients

Step 2: Place the espresso, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlua, and ½ oz simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add 1 handful ice and shake until cold.

Espresso Martini in cocktail glass

Step 3: Strain into a martini glass. Top with coffee beans, the traditional garnish.

Variation: an Espresso martini without simple syrup

Simple syrup rounds out the flavors in this Espresso Martini and makes for a balanced drink. Even though we’re not big sweet cocktail fans, we like this one with added sweetness. However, try this if you prefer less sweetness:

  • Use half the simple syrup, which still lets the flavors shine.
  • Make an Espresso Martini recipe with no simple syrup. Kahlua has added sugar, so combining it with vodka and espresso still makes for a sweet and balanced drink.

Coffee making methods

To add the coffee to an Espresso Martini, there are a few different coffee making methods:

  • Espresso: You can use an espresso machine or portable espresso maker to make an espresso shot. You can also use non-traditional tools like making French press espresso.
  • Strong coffee or Moka Pot: Simply make strong coffee using double the grounds of your regular method. You can also use a Moka Pot (Bialetti) to make strong coffee that has a flavor in between espresso and coffee.
  • Cold brew concentrate: You can also make an Espresso Martini using cold brew concentrate, either purchased or homemade. This has the added benefit of already being chilled! The concentrate is very strong and has a similar flavor to espresso (make sure not to water it down before using).

Does an Espresso Martini have caffeine?

Yes! This coffee martini has caffeine from the coffee and the Kahlua. The espresso contributes 64 mg caffeine and the Kahlua 2.5 mg, for a total of about 66 mg in this drink. This is about 70% the amount of caffeine in 1 cup of coffee (95 mg).

Frozen variation

Want to make a fun frosty spin on this drink that’s even easier to make? Try the Frozen Espresso Martini! This recipe makes 2 to 3 drinks in a blender and it’s so frosty and delicious. It’s perfect for summer, but we like to drink it in any season.

Frozen Espresso Martini

All about Kahlua

Kahlua is a pretty widely known liqueur…but what actually is it made of? Here’s what to know about this coffee liqueur:

  • Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that’s made in Mexico. It’s made with rum, sugar and coffee. It does have some caffeine, but only about 25% as much as the same volume of coffee. The standard Kahlua is dairy-free, vegan and plant-based: it contains only rum, sugar and coffee.
  • How much does Kahlua cost? It costs about $20 per bottle.
  • What are some substitutes for Kahlua? You can also use other types of coffee liqueur, like Tia Maria or Sheridan’s.
  • What other cocktails use Kahlua? Use it to make Kahlua drinks like the White Russian, Black Russian or Mudslide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an espresso machine to make an Espresso Martini?

While freshly brewed espresso is ideal for the most authentic flavor, you can use strong brewed coffee or even cold brew concentrate as a substitute. Just make sure it’s chilled before adding it to the cocktail shaker.

What’s the best way to get a frothy top on my Espresso Martini?

The key to a good froth is shaking the cocktail vigorously with ice in a cocktail shaker.

What are the three coffee beans on top for?

The three coffee beans are a traditional garnish for Espresso Martinis. They are said to represent health, wealth, and happiness. Some people also believe the number three is a symbol of luck.

Frozen Espresso Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-espresso-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-espresso-martini/#comments Mon, 20 May 2024 13:30:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=161264 Try this refreshing twist on a classic cocktail: the frozen espresso martini! This easy recipe blends 4 ingredients into a creamy, frosty puree with rich coffee undertones. It’s a coffee cocktail that hits the spot in any season!

Frozen Espresso Martini in stemmed glass.

Here’s your signature summer cocktail: the frozen espresso martini! The classic espresso martini has vaulted into one of the most popular cocktails in America. So why not try a frozen spin on the classic?

We created our own spin on this recipe and it is extremely simple to make! Many recipes call for making espresso and freezing it into ice cubes, but who has time for that? You can make our version in just 5 minutes in a blender. The creamy, frosty flavor with rich coffee undertones is absolutely divine. We can’t wait for you to try it!

Ingredients in a frozen espresso martini

As cocktail experts with over 300 cocktail recipes in our library, this one has a special place in our hearts! It came about as a happy accident. Wondering if we could simply use bottled cold brew coffee in a frozen version of the classic Espresso Martini, we whipped out our blender. Turns out, it works perfectly—meaning you can have the frozen version of this cocktail ready in just 5 minutes. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Vodka: The smooth, neutral spirit provides a base for the cocktail, allowing the other flavors to shine.
  • Kahlúa: This coffee liqueur adds sweetness and a hint of rum complexity to the mix.
  • Cold brew coffee (or strong coffee): The strong, concentrated coffee brings the bold, caffeinated essence of espresso to the martini without the need to make espresso. You can also make coffee using your favorite method: make it double strength and chill it before blending.
  • Sugar: Sugar balances the bitterness of the coffee and enhances the overall flavor. If desired, you can substitute with simple syrup, maple syrup, or agave syrup, using ¾ of the sugar specified in the recipe.
  • Ice: Crushed or cubed ice chills the cocktail and creates a frosty, refreshing texture.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, the frozen espresso martini is quick and simple to blend. Here are the basic steps (or scroll down for the recipe):

Frozen espresso Martini ingredients

Step 1: Gather the ingredients: 1 cup cold brew coffee, ¼ cup Kahlua, ¼ cup vodka, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 3 cups ice.

How to make a frozen espresso martini Step 2

Step 2: Blend the ingredients in a blender.

Frozen Espresso Martini Step 3: Garnish.

Step 3: Pour into glasses and garnish with 3 coffee beans.

What’s an espresso martini?

The Espresso Martini is a vodka martini made with coffee that was invented in 1983. London bartender Dick Bradsell of the Soho Brasserie created the drink for a patron who asked for a drink to wake her up.

Apparently the coffee machine was right next to the drink station, and the Espresso Martini was born. The name came in the 1990’s when flavored martinis were all the rage.

Coffee methods

We like buying purchased cold brew coffee concentrate for a frozen espresso martini because it’s so simple! You can also make homemade cold brew coffee, which is very easy and a much cheaper method. If you have a French press, try French press cold brew.

Or, make strong coffee using a dark roast bean: French press or pour over work well. Another great option is Moka Pot coffee (coffee made with a Bialetti), since its flavor is somewhere between coffee and espresso. Cool the coffee before blending.

More about Kahlua

Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that’s made in Mexico. It’s made with rum, sugar and coffee. It does have some caffeine, but only about 25% as much as the same volume of coffee. The standard Kahlua is dairy-free, vegan and plant-based: it contains only rum, sugar and coffee.

You can also use other types of coffee liqueur in a frozen espresso martini, like Tia Maria or Sheridan’s. Use up leftovers to make Kahlua drinks like the White RussianBlack Russian or Mudslide.

Frequently asked questions

How does a frozen espresso martini differ from a regular one?

The main difference is texture. A frozen espresso martini is blended with ice, creating a slushy, refreshing drink, similar to a frozen margarita. The flavor profile is similar to the classic cocktail.

Can I adjust the sweetness level?

Absolutely! If you prefer a sweeter drink, add a bit more sugar. For a less sweet version, reduce the amount. We don’t suggest omitting it.

What kind of garnish should I use?

Coffee beans are the classic choice, but you can also use a sprinkle of cocoa powder or even a dollop of whipped cream.

Can I make a large batch ahead of time?

It’s best to blend right before serving to have the correct slushy texture. If desired, you can mix up the liquids and refrigerate, then blend with ice right before serving. You can also blend and freeze for up to 1 hour, then stir with a fork before serving.

10 Simple Gin Cocktails https://www.acouplecooks.com/simple-gin-cocktails/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/simple-gin-cocktails/#comments Thu, 25 Apr 2024 16:22:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=159947 Craving a fun gin drink but short on time? Here’s how to craft simple gin cocktails with just a few ingredients and minimal effort.

Gin and Lemonade

Sometimes you’ve got time to mix up some fun cocktails, but other times you want something that’s quick and easy. If you’ve got a bottle of gin on hand, here are our top simple gin cocktails that are easy to throw together.

What’s a simple gin cocktail?

How do we define simple here? We’ve got a whole list of our best gin cocktails that includes all the classics. This collection is a sub-set of gin cocktails that take 5 minutes and are made with only a few ingredients and no fancy techniques. Many of them you can build right in the glass, so you don’t even need to dirty a cocktail shaker!

There’s everything from two-ingredient gin cocktails to simple bubbly highballs. Here’s what to mix with gin (tonic water and beyond!) to make an easy, breezy drink to enjoy. Alex and I have made these recipes multiple times, and we love every one of them! Some top favorites are the Gin Rickey, Gin Gin Mule, and Salty Dog.

The recipes: our top 10 simple gin cocktails

Best types of gin

The general rule around gin cocktails: the better the gin, the better the drink. Don’t buy the cheapest gin you can find. Try to invest in a mid-price range gin: the drink will only taste as good as the gin you invest in! Here are a few notes:

  • MalfyAviationBeefeater London Dry have a developed, botanical flavor that blends well in cocktails.
  • Locally distilled gin is a great option! In Indianapolis, we like 8th Day Distillery, Hotel Tango, and Big Heart Gin.
  • Steer clear of strong flavored sipping gins in cocktails. For us this includes brands like Tanqueray gin (very floral) and Opihr gin (spice-forward). These types of gin can overpower the subtlety in many mixed drinks.

Looking for more gin cocktail ideas? We’ve got recipes for every season! Here are a few of our top ideas:

Frequently asked questions

What kind of gin should I use for these cocktails?

Malfy, Aviation, and Beefeater London Dry is a versatile choice for most simple cocktails. However, you can explore other styles like juniper-forward gins or citrusy gins depending on your taste preference.

Do I need fancy ingredients for these cocktails?

Not at all! Most recipes use readily available ingredients like citrus juice, tonic water, and simple syrup.

Can I make these cocktails without a shaker?

Absolutely! Many of the recipes, like the Gin and Tonic, Gin Rickey, and Gin and Lemonade can be built directly in the glass. For drinks requiring mixing, a mason jar or even a tightly sealed mug can work in a pinch.

How can I add a personal touch to these simple cocktails?

Experiment with different garnishes! Fresh herbs like mint, rosemary, or thyme can add a touch of elegance. You can also use slices of cucumber, orange, or lemon for a pop of color and flavor.

Hugo Spritz https://www.acouplecooks.com/hugo-cocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/hugo-cocktail/#comments Thu, 25 Apr 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=80991 Cool down with a refreshing Hugo Spritz! This bubbly cocktail mixes elderflower liqueur, sparkling wine, and fresh mint for a light and flavorful summer drink that’s easy to make at home.

Hugo Spritz cocktail with St-Germain bottle.

This cocktail might be the literal definition of refreshing. If you love bubbly spritzes, run don’t walk to try the Hugo Spritz cocktail! This Italian cocktail is a spin-off on the Aperol spritz and even better, in our opinion.

Why we love this recipe: A Hugo Spritz is made with delicate floral elderflower liqueur and bubbly Prosecco, which compliment each other perfectly. The bubbly combination transports you right to Northern Italy, where this cocktail was born and is popular to this day! It’s nuanced and lightly sweet, compared to the bold sweetness of an Aperol spritz.

What’s a Hugo Spritz?

The Hugo cocktail is a spritz cocktail made with Prosecco, elderflower syrup, and soda water. The drink was invented in 2005 by Roland Gruber in Northern Italy (the South Tyrol region just south of Austria). He created the drink as an alternative to the classic Aperol spritz, and it quickly spread across the country and into Europe.

Hugo Spritz ingredients

The Hugo Spritz cocktail is light and floral, accented with the delicate bubbles of Prosecco. Where the Aperol spritz is sweet and citrusy, this spin is sophisticated and even more refreshing. The original Hugo Spritz used elderflower syrup. Here in the US it’s easier to find a bottle of St Germain elderflower liqueur, so it’s a natural substitute. Here’s are the ingredients you need:

  • St-Germain liqueur: St-Germain is a liqueur made with elderflower, known for its floral flavor.
  • Prosecco: This Italian sparkling white wine is from the Veneto region, with a delicate flavor and light bubbles. You can use any type of champagne if desired.
  • Soda water: Use club soda or unflavored sparkling water (we use our SodaStream to make it at home). Avoid tonic water here, since it is flavored with quinine and lightly sweetened.
  • Fresh mint: Fresh mint as a garnish is what makes it a Hugo Spritz.

🍾 Tip: A 750 ml bottle of Prosecco is 25 ounces, enough for 8 drinks. If you’re making 2 drinks, a mini bottle is perfect—it holds 187 mL or about 6 ounces!

How to make a Hugo Spritz cocktail

The Hugo cocktail is so easy to make: you don’t even have to dirty a cocktail shaker! The spritz family of drinks is fantastic because you simply pour the ingredients into a glass.

The Hugo spritz is easy to make, and you can build the drink it right in the glass. This makes it a great choice for entertaining, especially as a summer cocktail. Here are the basic steps (or jump to the full recipe):

Step 1: Add St-Germain to a glass filled with ice and stir. Top with sparkling wine.

Step 2: Add soda water and garnish with mint.

Step 2: Add soda water. Garnish with fresh mint and serve.

More about St-Germain

The key to this Hugo spritz cocktail is the elderflower liqueur, which infuses a delicate floral flavor throughout the drink. St-Germain is one of our favorite unique liquors to stock. Here’s a bit more about it:

  • St-Germain is a liqueur that’s made with elderflowers, the small white flowers of an elderberry plant. The flavor is light, sweetly floral, and fragrant.
  • How do you say St Germain? The name is French, so say “Sahn-jer-MAHN” with your best French accent.
  • Fun fact: it’s relatively new to the scene. Get this: St Germain was invented in 2007! The vintage-looking bottle makes it seem like it has hundreds of years of history, but it’s a newcomer. (Here’s the story behind it.)
  • What cocktails can you make with St-Germain? Try the French Gimlet and all our top St Germain Cocktails.
Hugo Spritz cocktail with mint garnish.

Prosecco & more sparkling wines

Traditionally a Hugo spritz cocktail uses Prosecco, the Italian version of champagne. But you can use any type of sparkling wine you like! Make sure it is “Brut,” which means that it is dry. Here’s a breakdown of the major types of sparkling wine including Prosecco vs Champagne:

  • Prosecco: Italian sparkling wine. It’s a slightly sweeter than champagne and has lighter bubbles. It’s fruity and flowery, with notes of apple, pear and lemon.
  • Champagne: French sparkling wine. It tastes bubbly and fruity, with undertones of almond and orange. It’s typically the most expensive sparkling wine.
  • Cava: Spanish sparkling wine. It has more citrus notes, and is a little more savory and less fruity.

More spritz recipes

There are lots of members of the spritz family! The Aperol spritz is the most popular, but try these other types of spritz recipes to enjoy bubbly drinks all season long:

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Hugo Spritz and an Aperol Spritz?

Both are refreshing spritzes, but Aperol Spritz uses a bitter orange liqueur, while Hugo Spritz features the floral and delicate elderflower liqueur (like St-Germain).

I don’t have elderflower liqueur. What can I use instead?

St-Germain is the classic choice, but you can substitute with another elderflower liqueur or elderflower syrup. Elderflower is key the flavor here.

How can I customize my Hugo Spritz?

Get creative! Try adding muddled berries, a squeeze of citrus, or a sprig of rosemary for a unique twist.

Limoncello Spritz https://www.acouplecooks.com/limoncello-spritz/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/limoncello-spritz/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2024 17:18:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=81015 Here are the secrets to making a limoncello spritz, a delightful Italian cocktail with sunshine lemon flavor and a delightful fizz. It’s easy to make and guaranteed to transport you to a carefree summer state of mind.

Limoncello spritz in stemmed glass with mint.

Why we love this recipe

Here’s an Italian cocktail that’s bubbly and flavored with pure lemon: the Limoncello Spritz! Limoncello is a liqueur that’s often sipped for after-dinner shots, but this ultra strong lemon elixir shines in mixed drinks, too.

This spin on the popular Aperol spritz is full of bright lemon flavor from the limoncello. As cocktail experts and certified mixologists, Alex and I like this spritz even better than the original! It’s bubbly and effervescent, with a searing citrus bite.

What’s a spritz?

The spritz is a drink invented in Italy that combines three ingredients: liqueur, sparkling wine (usually Prosecco) and soda water. You can make a spritz of any type using these two ingredients and any mixer of your choosing. The basic spritz ratio is 3 parts sparkling wine, 2 parts liqueur, 1 part soda water.

Ingredients in a limoncello spritz

The limoncello spritz is a spin on the popular Aperol spritz, an Italian aperitif. While the spritz concept has been around for hundreds of years, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the Aperol spritz took the form it has today. The limoncello spritz just substitutes limoncello for Aperol, an Italian amaro.

Spritzes are trending in popularity, so it’s not a surprise that this sunny spin is a top choice when it comes to summer cocktails. Here’s what you need to make a limoncello spritz:

  • Limoncello: A sweet, lemon-flavored liqueur originating from southern Italy.
  • Prosecco: A sparkling white wine from Italy’s Veneto region, known for its delicate flavor and light bubbles. You can use any type of champagne if desired.
  • Soda water: Use club soda or unflavored sparkling water (we use our SodaStream to make it at home). Avoid tonic water, since it is flavored with quinine and lightly sweetened.

🍾 Tip: A 750 ml bottle of Prosecco is 25 ounces, enough for 8 drinks. If you’re making 2 drinks, a mini bottle is perfect—it holds 187 mL or about 6 ounces!

How to make a limoncello spritz

The limoncello spritz is an incredibly easy to make drink! The spritz requires no cocktail shaker or juicing of citrus: you can build the drink it right in the glass. This makes it a great choice for entertaining, especially in the summer. Here are the basic steps for how to make a limoncello spritz:

Step 1: Add the limoncello to a glass with ice. Add Prosecco and soda water.

Step 1: Stir 2 oz limoncello in a glass with ice to make it cold. Add 3 oz Prosecco and 1 oz soda water.

Step 2: Garnish with mint and serve the limoncello spritz.

Step 2: Garnish with fresh mint and serve.

More about limoncello

If you’ve ever visited Italy, you know limoncello. But what actually is it this ultra strong yellow liquid?

  • Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur made by infusing lemon peels into vodka or other neutral spirits. It’s got a searing, straightforward lemon flavor and is the second most popular liqueur in Italy after Campari. You can get it everywhere in Italy, and it’s often served as shots after a big meal.
  • How much does limoncello cost? Limoncello has become very popular in the US, so you should be able to find it easily at your local liquor store. It costs about $20.
  • What else can limoncello be used for? The most popular use for limoncello is drinking it as shots, but it’s equally as good in cocktails! Try it in a Limoncello Mojito with lime and rum, or a Limoncello Martini with vodka and lemon juice.

Step it up: try clear ice!

Want to take your limoncello spritz to the next level? Try making clear ice! This type of ice is crystal clear and looks like what you’d get at a fancy bar. But you can make it at home! All you need is a cooler and 24 hours. Go to How to Make Clear Ice.

More lemon cocktails

Lemon flavored cocktails are some of the most refreshing alcoholic drinks! They’ve earned a place in our hearts for their forward citrusy flavor. Here are a few more lemon cocktails if you love limoncello:

Frequently asked questions

What is a Limoncello Spritz?

This refreshing Italian cocktail is a delightful blend of limoncello, prosecco, and soda water. It’s a close cousin to the Aperol Spritz, but with a brighter lemon flavor.

Is a Limoncello Spritz strong?

Compared to some cocktails, it’s on the lighter side. The prosecco has a lower alcohol content than some spirits, and the limoncello typically has less alcohol than rum or vodka. However, always drink responsibly.

What’s the ideal ratio for a Limoncello Spritz?

The classic ratio is 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts limoncello, and 1 part soda water. Feel free to adjust these proportions to your taste preference.

Do I need a special glass for a Limoncello Spritz?

Not at all! A stemmed wine glass or a tumbler filled with ice works perfectly.

What are some fun garnishes for a Limoncello Spritz?

A lemon wedge is a classic and refreshing choice. You can also get creative with a sprig of fresh mint, a few raspberries, or even a thin slice of orange.

Bushwacker Drink https://www.acouplecooks.com/bushwacker-drink/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/bushwacker-drink/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=93815 The Bushwacker drink is like a mashup of a chocolate milkshake and piña colada! This boozy frozen cocktail stars Kahlua and creme de cacao.

Bushwacker Drink in glass with cherry and chocolate shavings

Here’s a frozen cocktail that will blow your mind with its creamy, chocolaty flavor: the Bushwacker drink! It’s equal parts refreshing and rich—essentially a mashup of a chocolate milkshake and piña colada.

Why we love this recipe: The Bushwacker is lusciously smooth with notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. It’s perfect for sipping poolside as a summer cocktail, or as a dessert drink any time you’re dreaming of sun. Here’s everything you need to know to make it!

Bushwacker cocktail ingredients

The Bushwacker is a frozen cocktail made with rum, Kahlua, creme de cacao, cream of coconut, and milk, known for its creamy texture, sweet flavor, and boozy kick. Invented in the 1970’s in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, it has since become popular in Florida and the American South. What’s in a Bushwacker? This frozen boozy milkshake relies on these ingredients blended to perfection:

  • Rum: Dark rum is common in a Bushwacker, but you can use aged or white rum. We like this drink with aged rum (golden or añejo), because it has subtle flavor notes of vanilla, coconut, and caramel.
  • Kahlua: Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that’s made in Mexico. You can use other types of coffee liqueur like Tia Maria.
  • Creme de cacao: This chocolate liqueur carries the milkshake flavor.
  • Cream of coconut: Make sure to buy cream of coconut, a sweetened syrup for drinks (not coconut cream, which is a different product).
  • Milk and ice: Any type of milk works here, from 2% to whole to non-dairy milk like oat milk or almond milk. Blend everything with ice to make the Bushwacker!

The story behind the name?

The Bushwacker was invented at the Ship’s Store Pub in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in 1975 as a tropical spin on the White Russian by bartender Angie Conigliaro and manager Tom Brokamp. Apparently they named it after a guest’s dog, an Afghan hound named Bushwack!

Bushwacker Drink in glass with chocolate shavings and cherry

How to make a Bushwacker drink: step by step

Once you’ve got your specialty liquors, mixing up the Bushwacker drink is a breeze! Here’s what to do (or jump to the full recipe):

  • Step 1: Place 2 ounces (¼ cup) each rum, Kahlua, creme de cacao, cream of coconut, and 2% milk in a blender. Add 3 cups ice and blend.
  • Step 2: Pour into a glass and garnish with a straw. Garnish with a maraschino cherry for a classic presentation. The drink tends to separate, which is normal: just stir it up with your straw while drinking!

Pro tip: There’s no dairy in any of the liqueurs in a Bushwacker drink, so it’s easy to make it a dairy free or vegan cocktail using oat milk.

What is creme de cacao?

Despite what you might think, creme de cacao is not creamy or made with dairy! This special liqueur is one of the oldest around. Here’s more about it:

  • Creme de cacao is a chocolate liqueur, available in both white and dark varieties. It’s possibly one of the first alcoholic beverages, made in the 1600’s by monks after cocoa beans were brought back to Europe from America (source). The original Bushwacker had dark creme de cacao, but white is easier to find and what we call for here.
  • What does creme de cacao taste like? White creme de cacao tastes like milk chocolate with notes of vanilla. The darkvariety tastes richer with dark chocolate notes.
  • Is it worth buying? Yes, if you like dessert drinks! Use it to make creme de cacao drinks like the Brandy AlexanderChocolate Martini, or Grasshopper.

Look for cream of coconut

Another important ingredient in the Bushwacker drink: cream of coconut! If you read one thing in this article, note this: Buy cream of coconut, not coconut cream! What’s the difference? Here’s what to know about cream of coconut vs coconut cream:

  • Cream of coconut is a sweetened syrup for drinks, made with coconut cream and sugar. It’s sold in handy squeeze bottles (a popular brand is Coco Real). Cream of coconut is easy to find online or at liquor stores. Use up leftovers in coconut cocktails like the Piña Colada, Chi Chi, Painkiller, or Coconut Martini.
  • Coconut cream is unsweetened, very thick, and has a strong coconut flavor. It’s typically sold in cans next to the coconut milk. Coconut cream is made from chilling coconut milk and then skimming off the layer of cream that floats to the top. Avoid using it in cocktails!

Pro tip: If you accidentally buy coconut cream, you can still save your Bushwhacker drink! Use 1 oz coconut cream and 1 oz simple syrup in place of the 2 oz cream of coconut.

Use Kahlua or any coffee liqueur

The last ingredient of note in the Bushwacker drink is Kahlua, a popular brand of coffee liqueur. Here’s more about it:

Bushwacker Drink

More sweet & frozen drinks

The Bushwacker is one in a family of sweet cocktails and frozen alcoholic drinks. Here are a few related drinks you might enjoy:

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a Bushwacker?

This frozen cocktail is a tropical blend of rum, coffee liqueur, cream of coconut, dark crème de cacao, and cream or milk. It’s known for its creamy texture, sweet flavor profile, and boozy kick.

Is a Bushwacker strong?

Generally, it’s not an overly strong drink, but it packs enough alcohol content to be enjoyed responsibly.

What does a Bushwacker taste like?

The dominant flavors are chocolate and coconut, with hints of coffee and rum. The creaminess adds a luxurious mouthfeel, and the overall taste is sweet and refreshing.

Is a Bushwacker similar to a Piña Colada?

While both are creamy and tropical, a Piña Colada features rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. The Bushwacker adds coffee liqueur, dark crème de cacao, and skips the pineapple juice, resulting in a more chocolatey and coffee-forward flavor.

What kind of rum is best for a Bushwacker?

Dark rum is the traditional choice, offering a deeper flavor compared to lighter rums. However, you can also aged rum (anejo) with great results. White rum works too, and has a more straightforward flavor.

Can I use a different type of milk?

Yes! Opt for whole milk for a richer texture, or skim milk for a lighter option. You can also use non-dairy milks like oat milk and almond milk, which make this drink vegan and dairy-free.

What’s the best way to serve a Bushwacker?

Serve your Bushwacker in a chilled hurricane glass for a festive touch. Garnish with a maraschino cherry for a classic presentation.

Want a berry-based spin on your favorite drink? Try the blueberry margarita! As two cocktail experts we’ve made margarita recipes of every color of the rainbow, and one is solidly a favorite.

What we love about this recipe: This blueberry margarita has a beautifully sweet tart flavor and a fluorescent pink-purple hue. It’s great for impressing friends for a summer party or barbecue, or for mixing up a single drink to sip on the patio. Alex and I make a lot of margaritas, and outside of the classic margarita recipe this is one of our favorite fruity spins!

Ingredients in a blueberry margarita

The margarita is one of the most popular classic cocktails of all time, invented in Mexico in the 1930’s. The standard recipe is just 3 ingredients: tequila, orange liqueur (Triple Sec or Cointreau), and lime juice. For a blueberry margarita, all you need to do is muddle some fresh blueberries before shaking up the drink! To offset the tartness of the berries, you’ll need a hint of simple syrup. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

Can you use frozen blueberries?

This blueberry margarita works with either fresh or frozen blueberries. But we recommend thawing the berries first! This isn’t a frozen margarita, so it’s not blended in a blender. Instead, it’s shaken in a cocktail shaker with ice. The flavor is slightly fresher with fresh berries, but the difference is slight.

Blueberries

For the orange liqueur: Cointreau vs Triple Sec

What’s the best orange liqueur for a blueberry margarita: Cointreau or Triple Sec? You can use either, but we’ve got a favorite. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Top choice: Cointreau. Cointreau is a premium orange liqueur with a developed-orange perfume flavor. It has notes of oak and vanilla, which make it taste more sophisticated than Triple Sec.
  • Next choice: Triple Sec. Triple Sec is slightly less refined in flavor than Cointreau: it has a very straightforward orange essence (almost like orange vodka). But either work in a blueberry margarita.

How to make a blueberry margarita: step by step

Here are the basic steps for how to make a blueberry margarita! This margarita is muddled in a cocktail shaker: it’s not made in a blender like our strawberry margarita or raspberry margarita. Here are the basic steps (or jump to the full recipe):

  • Step 1: Cut a notch in a lime wedge, then run the lime around the rim of a glass. Dip the edge of the rim into a plate of salt (or for a festive look, use Margarita Salt).
  • Step 2: Place ¼ cup blueberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, and muddle them until fully mashed. Add the 1 ½ oz tequila, 1 oz Cointreau, ½ oz lime juice, and ½ oz simple syrup to a cocktail shaker and fill it with ice. Shake until cold.
  • Step 3: Strain the margarita into the glass with the salted rim. Fill the glass with ice and garnish with a lime wedge and extra blueberries.

Make a blueberry margarita pitcher (8 servings)

Mixing up drinks for a crowd? You can easily make a blueberry margarita pitcher: just multiply this recipe times 4! You can make the recipe right in the pitcher; there’s no need to shake and strain. Here’s what to do:

  • Mash 2 cups blueberries and strain them into a pitcher.
  • Add 1 ½ cups tequila, 1 cup Triple Sec, ½ cup lime juice. and ½ ounce simple syrup.
  • Add 3 handfuls of ice and stir until cold. Pour into glasses and serve!

Frequently asked questions

Fresh or frozen blueberries?

Fresh blueberries are ideal for the best flavor and texture. However, frozen blueberries can work in a pinch, but they will need to be thawed and may dilute the drink slightly.

Do I need to muddle the blueberries?

Yes, muddling the blueberries releases their juices and intensifies the flavor.

What type of tequila should I use?

A silver or blanco tequila is the most common choice for margaritas, including the blueberry version. It offers a clean and crisp base that allows the blueberry flavor to shine.

Can I use a different type of sweetener?

Yes! Simple syrup, agave nectar, or even honey can be used to sweeten your margarita to taste.

What can I add for a citrusy kick?

A splash of fresh lime juice will add a classic margarita element alongside the blueberry sweetness. You can also use a lime wedge for rimming the glass.

What’s the best way to rim the glass for a blueberry margarita?

For a unique touch, rim the glass with a sugar rim. For a festive twist, use a Tajin rim (chili-lime powder blend) for a sweet and spicy contrast.

What’s a fun way to garnish a blueberry margarita?

Fresh blueberries make a perfect and thematic garnish! A sprig of mint or a lime wedge also add a refreshing touch.

This beer margarita recipe is a refreshing twist on the classic, blending tangy lime and tequila with the crispness of your favorite beer. It’s easy to make, perfect for parties, and guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Beer Margarita in glass mug with lime.

Why not add a little lager to your margarita? Yes, a beer margarita is a fun spin on the classic margarita, also known as a beergarita or a beerita. Turns out, hops pair perfectly with the tart lime and orange perfume of a margarita.

Why we love this recipe: Many beer margarita recipes call for frozen limeade concentrate. But that’s not what a great cocktail is made of, is it? This beer margarita recipe has no limeade: just pure lime juice against the citrus and bitter notes of a beer. It became an instant favorite around here!

What’s in a beer margarita?

As the name suggests, a beer margarita is simply a margarita served with beer. The margarita itself is a classic alcoholic drink on the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails. The beerita adds beer to the mix, along with a little simple syrup:

  • Tequila
  • Cointreau (orange liqueur)
  • Lime juice
  • Beer
  • Simple syrup

As mentioned above: most beer margarita recipes call for frozen limeade concentrate. For our take, we wanted to stick with the classic margarita: so we simply used our margarita recipe, plus beer and a hint of simple syrup. The flavor is so pure, tangy, and nuanced from the beer: it was an instant hit at our house!

Beer margarita recipe.

The type of beer for a beergarita

To make a great beer margarita, you can’t use just any old beer! There are a few options we recommend:

  • Use a lager for a classic flavor, like Corona since it’s a Mexican beer. Or,
  • Step it up Craft IPA! This is what we did for ours, and it really took it over the top. Choose a hoppy IPA with citrus notes.
  • Avoid strong or hoppy beers that might overpower the margarita flavors.

How to make a beer margarita

To mix up your own beer margarita, there’s not much to it! You don’t even need to use a cocktail shaker with this one, which makes it even easier. Here’s what to do:

  1. Rim the glass with salt. Salt enhances the sweet and sour flavors in the drink, and gives you that classic margarita flavor.
  2. Stir together in the serving glass. Take the tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, and Cointreau, and stir it together in a glass.
  3. Add ice and pour in the chilled beer. The beer adds just the right bubbly carbonation to this classic drink.

Ideas for the salt rim

For this beer margarita, we skipped the salt rim for a little variation. (Hey, we have 25 other margarita recipes and they all have a salt rim!) It’s not needed for the flavor. But if you love that classic margarita salty zing, feel free to add it prior to mixing up your beergarita.

The best salt for a salt rim? Use kosher salt or flaky sea salt, since they have the best coarse texture. If you want to make it look even more festive, try a batch of our margarita salt. The green and orange colors of lime and orange zest look beautiful against the glass.

How to serve a beer margarita

The beergarita is really perfect for anytime you’d serve a regular margarita! It’s great with Mexican-style food of all kinds: serve with shrimp tacos, guacamole, salsa, and grilled corn for a stellar meal.

Frequently asked questions

What is a beer margarita?

This unique cocktail combines the classic margarita flavors of tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur with the crispness and fizz of your favorite beer.

Won’t it taste weird?

Surprisingly, no! The tartness of the margarita complements the bitterness of the beer, creating a refreshingly balanced drink.

What kind of beer is best for a beer margarita?

Light beers like lagers, pilsners, or wheat beers work best. Avoid strong or hoppy beers that might overpower the margarita flavors.

Should I build the drink or shake it?

Building the drink (layering ingredients) is the preferred method. Shaking it can create too much foam.

Do I need a special glass for a beer margarita?

Not at all! We suggest using a glass mug, pint glass, or mason jar for a more casual feel.

Strawberry Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-margarita/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-margarita/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2024 19:10:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=62509 This strawberry margarita recipe is frosty, fruity and refreshing! It’s easy to make with frozen berries and a blender, a delightful balance of sweet and tart that’s perfect for parties.

Strawberry Margarita in rocks glass with salt rim and strawberry garnish

Love margaritas but want a fruity spin? Try this tasty and refreshing Strawberry Margarita recipe! This one is frosty and fruity, full of sweet berry flavor and perfectly complimented with the zing of lime and tequila.

Why we love this recipe: The margarita pairs perfectly with fruit, and we’ve already got several fruity margarita recipes under our belt, like watermelon, mango and peach. But the strawberry margarita is our favorite! We’re 100% in love with its vibrant red color and sweet tart flavor.

Ingredients in a strawberry margarita

The margarita is one of the most popular cocktails of all time, and the classic definition has just three ingredients: lime juice, Cointreau, and tequila. That’s what’s in our classic margarita recipe, our very favorite of them all. This strawberry margarita is like a combination between the classic and a frozen margarita! It’s made in a blender, and comes out with a frosty texture. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

Frozen strawberries

How to make a strawberry margarita

The strawberry margarita is made in a blender, so it’s not the standard way to make a classic margarita. It’s actually even easier, since you don’t need a cocktail shaker! This strawberry margarita recipe makes two drinks, so you can drink with a friend or partner, or increase the amounts of a larger size. Here’s what to do (or go to the full recipe below):

  1. Step 1: A salted rim is a must: the salt enhances the sweet and sour flavors in the drink.
  2. Blend! Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until it’s full combined and creamy.

For a more liquid texture, keep on blending

The texture of this strawberry margarita is icy, but you can also make it more of a room temperature fruity margarita. Just keep blending it! If you blend for a few minutes, it will become less icy and have more of a blended, juice like texture.

  • Icy texture: Keep it frozen for a smoothie-like texture by blending just until it’s fully integrated and icy.
  • Juicy texture: If you keep blending for a few minutes, you can get to a texture that’s more like juice. It’s still cold, but you can taste the flavors even more when it’s not as icy.

Which texture do we prefer? Well, we like it both ways! Personally I like it a little warmer so I can taste the sweet berries and edge of the tequila. But keep it icy and it’s a perfect summer cocktail for a hot afternoon on the patio.

How to make a strawberry margarita: margarita glass with strawberry garnish

What tequila for strawberry margaritas?

You can use any type of tequila for this strawberry margarita, but keep the following in mind:

  • Buy at least mid-range tequila. This cocktail tastes only as good as the quality of alcohol. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35.
  • Tequila blanco or reposado works, but fruity margaritas are best with tequila blanco. We love the nuance that comes with using tequila reposado (aged) in margaritas. But for this fruity margarita with an icy texture, you can use tequila blanco! Some brands we recommend are Espolon Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, Patrón Silver, and Casamigos.

Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen?

You can use either ripe fresh strawberries or frozen strawberries in this strawberry margarita recipe! Using fresh berries, the texture will come out with the juicy texture mentioned above.

The advantage of using frozen berries is the icy texture, kind of like a strawberry daiquiri but not as thick. Frozen berries are also very easy to store, making it simple to whip up strawberry margaritas on demand!

Ideas for the salt rim

To take the drink presentation over the top, try our homemade margarita salt for the salt rim! You can even skip the orange zest and simply use lime (as shown). Tajín is another great option for the rim, a Mexican seasoning blend that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor.

Mezcal Mule https://www.acouplecooks.com/mezcal-mule/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/mezcal-mule/#comments Sun, 21 Apr 2024 00:13:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=71517 Here’s how to make a Mezcal mule! This smoky version of the Moscow mule is a tasty Mexican style twist on the classic.

Mezcal mule in copper mug.

Love mezcal? Then you must try a mezcal mule! This spin on the classic Moscow mule has a hint of smoke is full of bubbly, tangy flavor. Using the tequila-based smoky liquor infuses an irresistible sharpness to every sip!

Why we love this recipe: Alex and I love making Moscow mule variations because the gingery, bubbly flavor is so simple to mix up right in the mug, making it perfect for entertaining or just a quick happy hour drink. Infusing the classic mule with smoky flavor is such a fun way to use mezcal and always wins over mezcal afficionados (like ourselves!).

Ingredients in a mezcal mule

The mezcal mule is spin on the Moscow mule, a classic cocktail from the 1940’s. The original features vodka, lime and ginger beer, traditionally served in a copper mug. While most mezcal mule recipes simply switch out the vodka for smoky mezcal, we mixed ours with tequila for a balanced flavor.

The Moscow mule is such a classic that it made the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails, meaning that it has an “official” definition. Swap in mezcal and tequila for vodka to get this Mexican style spin. The ingredients in a mezcal mule are:

  • Mezcal
  • Tequila
  • Lime juice
  • Ginger beer

A mix of mezcal and tequila adds depth and balance

Some mule recipes use only mezcal and skip the tequila. In our recipe testing, we found a mule with straight mezcal tastes very strong and overpowers the delicate bubbles of the ginger beer. Even as smoky flavor lovers, Alex and I were a bit overwhelmed by a straight mezcal drink.

Mix in some tequila and it’s the perfect balance to the flavors. If you prefer a strong smoky flavor to your mezcal mule, feel free to use equal parts mezcal and tequila here (1 ounce of each).

How to make a mezcal mule: step by step

The mezcal mule is one of the easiest cocktails you can make! You don’t even have to use a cocktail shaker: just mix it all in the glass. Here’s how to make a mezcal mule (or jump right to the recipe):

  1. Step 1: Pour ½ oz mezcal, 1 ½ oz tequila, ½ oz lime juice, and 4 oz ginger beer into a copper mug.
  2. Step 2: Add ice cubes, and garnish with lime. It’s that easy!
Mezcal bottle with limes.

More about mezcal

Mezcal is a type of alcohol made from the agave plant. Only one type of agave plant (blue agave) makes tequila, but mezcal can be made from 11 different varieties of agave. What gives mezcal its signature smoky flavor is cooking the agave in pits in the ground. It brings a depth and smokiness you don’t find in tequila!

Want more drinks with this liquor? Try all our mezcal cocktails, like the Mezcal Paloma, Mezcal Negroni, Mezcal Sour, and Mezcal Margarita.

Copper mugs for mules

Moscow mules are traditionally served in copper mugs. Why? It’s partially because of tradition, since this is how the drink has been served since the 1940’s. But there’s also a functional reason: copper mugs immediately takes on the temperature of the drink. The sensation of taking a sip of the drink with a cool copper rim makes it taste even colder and more refreshing!

It’s a fun sensory element that’s totally worth finding the real thing for serving. But it’s not required: you can use any sort of chilled glass to serve a mule.

Where to buy copper mugs for mules? After spending years without real copper mugs, Alex and I splurged and got a set. You can use them for any type of drink, and they make great gifts, too. Here’s a link to some copper mugs.

Mezcal mule in copper mug with lime and mint garnish.

Best ginger beer for mules

For the best flavor for a Moscow mule, look for ginger beer made with real ginger, without artificial flavors or sweeteners. Q Ginger Beer has great flavor and is made with real ginger. It comes in small cans so you don’t have to open a large bottle. Fever Tree Ginger Beer also has great flavor; it’s made with real ginger and has no artificial sweeteners.

More Moscow mule variations

There are so many great Moscow mule variations to try! If you love a mezcal mule, then you’ll love these tasty spins on the classic:

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Mezcal Mule and a Moscow Mule?

They’re very similar! The main difference is the base spirit. A Moscow Mule uses vodka, while a Mezcal Mule uses mezcal, a smoky spirit made from agave. This swap adds a complex smokiness to the drink.

Can I use ginger beer in a can?

Yes, using a good quality canned ginger beer is perfectly acceptable. The small cans are helpful so you don’t have to open a large bottle!

What can I garnish my Mezcal Mule with besides lime?

A sprig of fresh mint, a cucumber slice, or a few slices of jalapeno can all add interesting flavor and visual appeal to your cocktail.

Do I need a copper mug?

A copper mug is traditional for Moscow Mules, but it’s not essential for a Mezcal Mule. Any chilled glass will work. However, copper mugs can help keep your drink colder for longer.

Is this a smoky cocktail?

The smokiness will depend on the type of mezcal you use. Espadin mezcal will offer a subtler smokiness, while other varieties can be quite smoky.

Italian Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/italian-margarita/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/italian-margarita/#comments Fri, 19 Apr 2024 00:25:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=59283 This Italian margarita recipe uses amaretto to give this classic cocktail a makeover! Fresh orange juice and almond liqueur bring unique twist to the flavors that’s irresistible.

Italian Margarita in glass with salt rim and Amaretto.

Want a simple makeover for your margarita? Try this Italian margarita recipe! Just like Mexican Pizza, this drink is a fusion of the best of Italian and Mexican cuisines: this time in cocktail form!

Why we love this recipe: This Mediterranean version of the classic cocktail swaps out orange liqueur for amaretto, and the almond essence adds a distinctly Italian vibe. Alex and I are big fans of traveling in Italy (Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast are faves): so of course we had to try the Italian margarita!

Ingredients in an Italian margarita

An Italian margarita is a variation on a classic margarita that uses amaretto in place of the orange liqueur (Cointreau), in combination with orange juice, lime juice, and tequila. The flavor has notes of almond and citrus on the finish, but the beginning of the sip tastes like your favorite margarita. Think of it as a sophisticated version of a margarita, kind of like the Cadillac Margarita. Here’s what’s in an Italian margarita:

  • Tequila
  • Orange or blood orange juice
  • Amaretto
  • Lime juice
Amaretto with Italian margarita.

Use blood orange juice for the brilliant color

You can use orange juice from a standard navel orange and this Italian margarita turns out with a warm orange color. But for a brilliantly colored cocktail, use blood orange juice!

Blood oranges have sweet juice and a bright pink color. We love this spin on it because it’s so eye-catching, just like our blood orange margarita. If you can find blood oranges, they’re absolutely worth buying. You can also find bottled blood orange juice at many grocery stores.

Cheater tip: If you like the look but can’t find blood oranges, a drizzle of pomegranate juice or cranberry juice would work too!

What’s the best tequila to use?

Many people suggest using tequila blanco for margaritas, but generally we prefer the robust flavor of tequila reposado. Here’s what to know about the best tequila for margaritas

  • Tequila blanco (silver or white tequila) has been aged less than 2 months and has a strong, straightforward flavor.
  • Tequila reposado (“rested” in Spanish) is aged longer, from 2 to 12 months. It has a more nuanced flavor, with notes of oak and vanilla.

Either way, try to find a mid-price range tequila when you make an Italian margarita. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35.

Amaretto bottle with Italian margarita.

What is amaretto?

Amaretto is an almond liqueur that originates from Italy. Today it’s made around the world and is stocked in bars worldwide. It has a distinctive flavor that’s both sweet and bitter (amaretto means in Italian “little bitter”). You may know the flavor from the popular amaretto cookies, a popular Italian sweet.

It’s worth getting a bottle for your shelf: you can use it in cocktails and in desserts! More drinks that feature amaretto are an Amaretto Sour, Amaretto Coffee, or a French Connection.

How to make an Italian margarita: step by step

The Italian margarita follows the typical margarita pattern: salt the rim, shake in a cocktail shaker, strain, garnish, serve. Shaking the drink allows it to get thoroughly chilled while slightly diluting the alcohol. Here’s an overview of how to make an Italian margarita (or jump to the recipe below):

  1. Step 1: Rim the glass with salt. Our favorite way is to cut a notch in a lime wedge and run it around the glass. Then dip the glass into a plate of kosher salt or flaky sea salt and rotate until the rim is covered.
  2. Step 2: Shake the tequila, orange juice, lime juice, and amaretto in a cocktail shaker with 4 ice cubes until cold.
  3. Step 3: Strain into the glass and serve. Garnish with an orange and lime wedge. You’ve made your Italian margarita!

Food to serve with Italian margaritas

Quick note: what type of food would you serve with Italian margaritas? You can go either way: Mexican or Italian style!

Two ways to step it up

Last note: here are a few ways to take this Italian margarita over the top! Alex and I love to make these when we have time:

  • Clear ice is artisanal ice that is perfectly clear (not cloudy), and looks like fancy ice you’d get in a bar. It’s absolutely game changing for your homemade cocktails!
  • This margarita salt with colorful orange and green of citrus zest is eye-catching and perfect for entertaining.

Alex and I are big margarita fans over here, so we’ve got lots of spins on this classic drink. Here are some of our favorite margarita recipes:

Frequently asked questions

Is it just a margarita with amaretto?

While amaretto is a key ingredient, an Italian Margarita offers a more complex flavor profile compared to a classic margarita. The amaretto adds a touch of almond sweetness that complements the tequila and lime.

What makes it “Italian”?

Amaretto, a sweet almond liqueur, is originally from Italy. This liqueur adds a distinctive Italian touch to the margarita.

Is it shaken or stirred?

An Italian Margarita is typically shaken with ice to create a frothy texture, similar to a classic margarita.

What’s the best way to rim the glass?

For an Italian touch, dip the rim of the glass in amaretto before coating it with sugar or a coarse salt like sea salt.

Do I have to use blood orange juice?

Not at all! You can use standard orange juice and the drink will be orange in color.

This Italian margarita recipe uses amaretto to give this classic cocktail a makeover! Fresh orange juice and almond liqueur bring unique twist to the flavors that’s irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) tequila blanco or reposado*
  • 1 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons) fresh squeezed orange juice or blood orange juice
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) amaretto
  • ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) lime juice
  • Kosher salt or flaky sea salt (or margarita salt), for the rim
  • For the garnish: Lime wedge, orange slice
  • Clear ice, if serving on the rocks

Instructions

  1. Cut a notch in a lime wedge, then run the lime around the rim of a glass. Dip the edge of the rim into a plate of kosher or flaky sea salt.
  2. Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with 4 ice cubes and shake until cold.
  3. Strain the margarita into the glass with the salted rim. Fill the glass with ice and serve garnished with a lime wedge and orange slice. (Consider using our clear ice for an artisan touch.)

Notes

Using blood orange juice gives the drink a bright red color; you can also use fresh squeezed orange juice for an orange color. Both drinks taste similarly citrusy.

For fun rim ideas, try margarita salt (with orange and lime zest), or a spicy Tajin rim. You could also use superfine sugar for rimming to bring out the sweet notes in the amaretto.

Lemon Drop Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-drop-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-drop-martini/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2024 17:59:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=52826 Here are the secrets to a refreshing and tangy lemon drop martini! Learn how to make this classic cocktail at home, from rim-dipping techniques to the ideal vodka-to-lemon ratio.

Lemon drop martini in martini glass with lemon garnish and sugar rim.

Love a classic sour cocktail? Then you’ll adore a lemon drop martini! This zingy drink is perfectly balanced and refreshingly tart, served with a sugar rim and a lemon twist. It looks so festive that it’s great for celebrations of all kinds. Whatever the occasion: this drink delivers!

Why we love this recipe: When we first tried the lemon drop martini, we could see why it’s a classic. It’s got a cool, clean flavor and a sophisticated vibe. It’s now solidly a part of our cocktail recipe repertoire!

Ingredients in a lemon drop martini

A lemon drop martini is a sweet and sour version of a vodka martini. Its similarities with the classic martini are in name only! The lemon drop is a classic alcoholic drink that makes the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails. That means it has an official definition of how to make it:

  • Citron vodka (or regular vodka): For our spin on the lemon drop martini, we use standard vodka to keep it simple. In our taste tests, citron vodka only adds a subtle citrus hint to the finish. But if you have citron vodka, by all means use it here!
  • Cointreau or triple sec: We prefer using Cointreau as the orange liqueur in this drink, but triple sec also works.
  • Lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice brings the zippy, tart flavor: steer clear of bottled juice here.
  • Simple syrup: Simple syrup balances the flavors: it’s a bar cart staple that’s easy to make at home.

Related drink: This drink is very close to a Vodka Sidecar, which uses similar ingredients!

How to make a lemon twist

How to make a lemon drop martini: step by step

If you’re ready to get drinking, here are the basic steps to the lemon drop martini:

  1. Step 1: Rim the glass with sugar. A classic lemon drop is served in a martini glass with sugar on the rim. This helps to balance out the tart flavor of the cocktail.
  2. Step 2: Shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Place 1 ½ oz vodka, ½ oz Cointreau, ½ oz lemon juice, and ½ oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Add 1 handful ice and shake until cold.
  3. Strain into a glass and add garnish. Strain the drink into the martini glass and add a lemon twist or lemon wheel.

How to make a lemon twist

🍋 The lemon twist makes a sophisticated lemon drop martini! For our method of making a lemon twist garnish using no special tools, go to How to Make a Lemon Twist.

Don’t want to try the twist? Slice a lemon wheel, then cut a notch in it and add it to the rim of the glass.

How to make a sugar rim

Using superfine sugar rim on the martini glass rim makes for a festive look, and it helps to balance out some of the tart flavor. Here are our tips to making the perfect rim:

  1. Spread the sugar on a plate in an even layer. Using superfine sugar is best, since it adheres best to the rim.
  2. Take a lemon wedge and cut a notch in the middle: then slide it around the rim of the glass. This moistens the rim without having to use your fingers!
  3. Tilt the glass into the sugar so that the sugar sticks to the outside edge.

Cointreau vs triple sec

We like this lemon drop martini recipe using Cointreau, which has a orange perfume flavor that’s well balanced between bitter and sweet. You can also use Triple Sec, which has a more straightforward, intense flavor. If you’re not sure whether to spring for a bottle of Cointreau, there’s a long list of great Cointreau drinks that use it, like the margarita and the Cosmopolitan.

When to serve a lemon drop martini

The lemon drop martini cocktail is tart and tangy, with a festive vibe. It works well for so many occasions. It’s great as a New Year’s Eve drink, Christmas or holiday drink, bachelorette party drink, celebration drink, and more!

There are lots of types of martinis, from dry to fruity. Once you’ve tried the lemon drop, here are a few more to mix up:

Frequently asked questions

What vodka is best for a lemon drop martini?

Citron vodka is classic, but we like using a high-quality, plain vodka here.

My rim keeps coming off! How can I get it to stick?

Use superfine sugar if you can, which adheres best. Moisten the rim of your martini glass with a lemon wedge or a very wet fingertip. Then, dip the rim into a shallow dish filled with the sugar.

How sweet or tart should my lemon drop martini be?

It’s a matter of personal preference! Start by following a recipe, then adjust the amount of simple syrup or lemon juice to your taste. For a more nuanced sweetness, consider using maple syrup as a sweetener.

Campari Spritz https://www.acouplecooks.com/campari-spritz/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/campari-spritz/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=65122 The Campari spritz pairs vibrant orange hues with sparkling sweetness: a refreshing Italian cocktail made for sipping! You’ll need just 3 ingredients for this delightful drink.

Campari spritz in glass with lemon wedge and straw.

Why we love this recipe

In the mood for a refreshing drink? Try a Campari spritz! Alex and I are big fans of this bitter and bubbly drink that mixes the popular aperitif with sparkling wine and soda water. It’s a play on the ever popular Aperol spritz where the bitter notes shine!

As cocktail experts and certified mixologists, Campari is one of our favorite ingredients to play with, and we love a good Campari cocktail! This one is a fun change up from the Negroni or Americano. Of course if you’re not a fan of bitter flavors, we recommend hitting up that Aperol spritz instead. Both are in our repertoire of favorite summer cocktails to sip al fresco!

Ingredients in a Campari spritz

A Campari spritz is spin on the popular Aperol spritz, an Italian aperitif made with Aperol. The spritz was invented back in the 1800’s in Italy as a way to water down sparkling wine by mixing in water. But it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the Aperol spritz took the form it has today. A Campari spritz swaps in Campari into the traditional formula. Here are the 3 ingredients you’ll need:

  • Campari: This Italian amaro—bitter liqueur—is also known as an aperitif, a liqueur meant to drink before a meal. We love its bright red color and its complex, extremely bitter flavor. While they’re in the same family, Aperol is much sweeter!
  • Sparkling wine: Use either Prosecco or champagne: we like Prosecco because it has a great flavor and is typically more economical. Another option is sparkling rosé!
  • Soda water: Use club soda or unflavored sparkling water (we use our SodaStream to make it at home).

🍾 Tip: A 750 ml bottle of Prosecco is 25 ounces, enough for 8 drinks. If you’re making 2 drinks, a mini bottle is perfect—it holds 187 mL or about 6 ounces!

Campari Spritz in glass with campari bottle.

How to make a Campari spritz: step by step

The Campari spritz is so easy to make: there’s no real technique involved at all! Just stir ingredients and top with bubbles. Here are the basic steps (or skip right to the full recipe):

  • Stir: Stir the Campari in a glass with ice to make it cold.
  • Top with bubbles: Add the Prosecco and soda water.
  • Garnish: Squeeze in juice from a lemon or orange wedge and serve.

Step it up: try clear ice!

If you really want to take your Campari spritz over the top, try making clear ice! This ice is crystal clear, with none of the cloudiness of normal ice. You can cut large chunks and they look just like a fancy bar! All you need is 24 hours and a small cooler! Go to How to Make Clear Ice.

Campari spritz pouring prosecco

Campari vs Aperol: what’s the difference?

You know Aperol from the Aperol spritz, but guess what? Campari has been around even longer. What’s the difference of Campari vs Aperol? They’re both Italian aperitivos meant to be served before a meal, and they’re even sold by the same Italian company (Gruppo Campari). Here’s the difference:

  • Campari is bright red and tastes very bitter, with sweet notes like cherry, clove, cinnamon and orange peel. It has a higher alcohol content (48 proof). Campari was invented in Italy in the 1860’s, and it’s used in classic cocktails like the Negroni and the Americano.
  • Aperol is bright orange and consider more “easy drinking” than Campari: the flavor is sweeter and more balanced, with notes of herbs. It has a lower alcohol content (22 proof). It was also invented in Italy, but years later in 1919.
Campari spritz

Cousin drinks to the Campari spritz

There are several drinks related to the Campari spritz! If you like this one, you’ll love:

  • A classic Americano uses Campari, sweet vermouth, and lots of soda water.
  • The Negroni Sbagliato is a favorite of ours: it’s a spin on the classic Negroni using Prosecco that we like even better than the original!
  • The Aperol Spritz aka Spritz Veneziano is sweet, herbal and bubbly: it really is as good as all the hype.

More spritz recipes

If you love bubbly spritzes, make sure to try these spritz recipes:

Frequently asked questions

What type of prosecco should I use?

Dry prosecco is ideal; look for a bottle labeled “brut” or “extra brut.” However, if you’d like to balance out the bitterness of the Campari, you can use a sweeter variety here.

What’s the best way to achieve the perfect ratio?

The classic ratio for a Campari Spritz is 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts Campari, and 1 part soda water. Feel free to adjust the proportions to suit your taste preference.

How do I garnish my Campari Spritz?

A classic garnish is a simple orange slice. You can also get creative with a lemon wedge, a sprig of rosemary, or even a few fresh berries.

Strawberry Daiquiri https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-daiquiri-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-daiquiri-recipe/#comments Wed, 17 Apr 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=40310 This strawberry daiquiri recipe is easy and full of luscious berry flavor! All you need are 5 minutes and a blender—no need for premade mix.

Strawberry daiquiri recipe: daiquiri in glass with straw

Ever tried to make a strawberry daiquiri recipe at home? There’s no need to buy store-bought daiquiri mix. A homemade strawberry daiquiri with real frozen strawberries tastes infinitely better than a mix from the store!

As two homemade cocktail experts with over 300 cocktail recipes in our library, this one is a fast favorite! The luscious, juicy berry flavor is irresistibly refreshing. All you need are a few ingredients, a blender, and 5 minutes to whip up this classic drink!

“Divine daiquiri! I made it just as directed and it is fresh with well blended flavors. I will use this recipe for all future daiquiris.” -Pat

Why make this strawberry daiquiri recipe?

Alex and I created this strawberry daiquiri recipe to have pure berry flavor. It’s just sweet enough, with just the right finish of white rum. If ever there was a perfect drink for sipping on the patio, this is it! Here’s why we love it:

  • The flavor is pure, using real berries! Who knows what’s in those store-bought daiquiri mixes. This daiquiri is made of real frozen berries and lime, giving it a lush flavor.
  • It’s perfectly sweetened. Some strawberry daiquiris are overly sweet, but not this one. It’s sweetened just enough so you can enjoy the pure berry flavor without a sugar crash. Pure maple syrup is a natural sweetener that we love: it gently sweetens and adds flavor nuance (without making it taste like maple).

How to make a strawberry daiquiri

This strawberry daiquiri had its first trial run one evening when our nephews visited for a cousin sleepover. We had homemade pizza (with our favorite pizza sauce and pizza dough) and a movie night with popcorn. By the end of the night, the adults were exhausted!

Once the littles were in bed, we pulled out the blender to make homemade daiquiris. Man, were they good, and the perfect recipe for tired parents reclaiming the evening. Here’s how to make the best strawberry daiquiri recipe:

  • Step 1: Blend it up. Blend 1 pound frozen strawberries, ¼ cup lime juice, 6 tablespoons simple syrup, 1 cup white rum, 1 cup ice, and ⅛ teaspoon salt in a blender until smooth. Taste and adjust the sweetener to your tastes.
  • Step 2: Garnish and serve. Pour into a glass and serve garnished with a lime slice and frozen strawberry! You can use any type of glass, from a margarita glass to a simple cocktail glass.

Tips for making a frozen strawberry daiquiri

A few things to keep in mind when you’re making this strawberry daiquiri recipe:

  • Use good quality rum. The better the quality of rum, the tastier the drink. Look for a bottle in the mid-price range, around $15 to $20 for a 750 ml bottle.
  • Use best quality frozen strawberries. We tried this with a few different types of frozen berries, and it tastes much better with the best quality brand.
  • Freeze or chill your rum (optional). When we made this strawberry daiquiri recipe, we chilled our rum in a cocktail shaker to get it really cold. You also can throw the rum in the freezer the night before to keep the drink very cold.

Let us know if you try out this strawberry daiquiri recipe, and if it helps for exhausted parent evenings like ours! Or serve it at a bridal shower, girl’s night, cookout, pool party, or anytime you need a fruity drink.

Did you know a classic daiquiri isn’t frozen?

This strawberry daiquiri and the frozen daiquiri are variations on the classic daiquiri, a cocktail made simply with rum, lime and sugar and served straight up in a cocktail glass. It’s a classic sour cocktail invented in the early 1900’s.

The frozen daiquiris popular today came along later as variations on the theme! Another spin to try is the sophisticated Hemingway daiquiri, starring grapefruit juice and Maraschino liqueur.

Virgin strawberry daiquiri in glass.

Variation: make a virgin strawberry daiquiri

The virgin strawberry daiquiri is a popular mocktail variation on the classic. Our virgin daiquiri uses similar ingredients, but skips the rum and uses tonic water or lemon lime soda. It makes a bubbly, sweet and frosty drink that we think is nearly as good as the original.

More daiquiri recipes

There are lots more daiquiri recipes to add to your repertoire! Here are a few more to try:

Frequently asked questions

What rum is best for a strawberry daiquiri?

A light rum is your best bet! Opt for white rum or silver rum for a clean and refreshing flavor that won’t overpower the strawberries.

Can I use frozen strawberries in a daiquiri?

Frozen strawberries are best to achieve that frosty daiquiri texture; we don’t recommend using frozen berries here.

My daiquiri is too sweet or too sour! How can I adjust it?

If it’s too sour, add a bit more simple syrup and blend. Taste and continue to add sweetener until the flavor is balanced. If it’s too sweet, add a splash more fresh lime juice to balance the sweetness and add a refreshing tartness.

What’s a fun twist on the classic strawberry daiquiri?

Replace half the frozen berries with another frozen fruit like mango, pineapple, or peach, for a unique flavor combination.

Pineapple Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/pineapple-margarita-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/pineapple-margarita-recipe/#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2024 15:34:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=81848 This pineapple margarita is a tropical spin on the classic! The winning combination of pineapple, tequila, and lime makes a refreshing cocktail bursting with flavor.

Pineapple Margarita in rocks glass with pineapple garnish.

Here’s a tropical drink that marries the perfect combination of pineapple, tequila and lime: the pineapple margarita! Over the years, Alex and I have become experts in all the margarita recipes, from the classic to the more funky and off-the-wall. This juicy, fruity summer cocktail has become a favorite that works in any season.

What we love about this recipe: The sweet pineapple goes hand in hand with the sharp bite of the tequila and zingy lime. Add Cointreau orange liqueur to the mix, and it’s bursting with tropical flavor. It’s just as easy as the classic, but makes an even bigger statement (we think). It’s perfect for parties, and we love serving up the spicy variation, too!

What’s in a pineapple margarita?

The classic margarita recipe is one of the most famous cocktails of all time, invented back in the 1930’s. In fact, it’s on the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails. This means that there’s an “official” definition of the ingredients in a margarita: lime juice, Cointreau, and tequila. We’re margarita purists and we love the simplicity of this drink made the right way.

This pineapple margarita is spin on the classic that’s in the same vein. The sweetness of the pineapple juice and the hint of sugar in the Cointreau make it the perfect sweet tart flavor. If you prefer a sweeter margarita, you can always add simple syrup or agave syrup. Here’s what you’ll need for a pineapple margarita:

  • Pineapple juice
  • Tequila (use blanco or reposado)
  • Cointreau
  • Fresh lime juice
Pineapple margarita

How to make a pineapple margarita

This pineapple margarita is “on the rocks,” meaning it’s served over ice. It’s a classic “shaken” cocktail you can mix up in a cocktail shaker. The salt rim is optional, but it adds just the right searing saltiness to each sip. Here’s what to do:

  1. Step 1: Rim the glass with salt. Cut a notch in a lime and use it to wet the rim. Place salt on a plate, then place the glass into the salt and rotate so just the outside of the rim is covered.
  2. Step 2: Shake in a cocktail shaker. Place the pineapple juice, tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker with 1 handful of ice and shake until cold.
  3. Strain into a glass and add ice. Strain it into a glass and serve with clear ice if serving on the rocks. We like to garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge, but that’s just for looks!

The best tequila for margaritas

You can use any type of tequila in this pineapple margaritas recipe. Our rule of thumb is to buy a mid-price range bottle: the price usually corresponds to the quality of liquor! Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35. You can use either blanco or reposado tequila here.

  • Tequila blanco (or “new” tequila) has been aged less than 2 months and has a strong, straightforward flavor.
  • Tequila reposado (“rested” in Spanish) is aged longer, from 2 to 12 months. It has a more nuanced flavor, with notes of oak and vanilla.

Ideas for the salt rim

To take the drink presentation over the top, try our homemade margarita salt for the salt rim! The festive green and orange from the citrus peel look beautiful against the yellow of the pineapple margarita. Tajín is another great option for the rim, a Mexican seasoning blend that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor.

Spicy variation: add jalapeño pepper!

🌶 Want to mix up this pineapple margarita? Make it spicy! Add 3 to 4 jalapeño pepper slices when making the cocktail, or go this Pineapple Jalapeno Margarita and Spicy Pineapple Margarita. The heat and tangy brightness of the pepper pairs perfectly with the tropical pineapple.

Make a pineapple margarita pitcher for a crowd

Want to mix up a batch for a crowd? Instead of making single drinks, mix up a big pitcher. Here’s what to do: we did the math so you don’t have to! To make a pitcher that serves 8 drinks, mix together in a pitcher:

  • 1 ½ cups tequila
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • ¾ cup Cointreau
  • ¾ cup lime juice

Add 3 handfuls of ice and stir until cold. Pour into glasses and serve!

Want more margarita ideas? We have lots more where this comes from. Here are some margarita recipes to try:

🍍Love pineapple? Try all our pineapple juice cocktails, like the tropical Pineapple Rum Cocktail or Pineapple Vodka Cocktail.

Frequently asked questions

My pineapple margarita is too sweet or tart! How can I adjust it?

Taste your margarita as you go. If it’s too sweet, add a little more lime juice for tartness. You can also add a bit of simple syrup or agave nectar in the recipe.

What’s the best way to rim a glass for a pineapple margarita?

For a classic touch, rim your glass with coarse kosher salt. You can also get creative with a superfine sugar rim or a chili lime salt or Tajin rim for a spicy kick.

Can I make a frozen pineapple margarita?

Yes, go to our Frozen Margarita recipe and substitute 4 cups frozen pineapple for the ice.

Classic Margarita Recipe https://www.acouplecooks.com/margarita-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/margarita-recipe/#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2024 13:30:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=144538 Our best margarita recipe is simple and classic, with fresh lime balanced by crisp tequila and citrusy orange liqueur. Here’s how to make a basic margarita—in 5 minutes with 3 ingredients! It’s a true fan favorite.

Margarita recipe in glass with limes and salt rim

There’s a reason the margarita is the world’s most popular tequila cocktail! This classic drink hits just the right balance of boozy tequila, zingy lime, and sweet orange liqueur. Alex and I are cocktail experts and certified mixologists with over 300 cocktail recipes in our library, but guess what? We keep coming back to this classic formula.

Why we love this basic margarita recipe: It takes just 3 ingredients for the best margarita recipe. It’s refreshing and balanced: boozy, zingy, salty, and sweet. We have made it countless times and even featured this recipe in our latest cookbook! You’ll love it, we promise.

“It was perfect. So many recipes out there are too sweet. This is a homerun!” -Rachel

Ingredients in this basic margarita recipe

The margarita is one of the most popular classic cocktails of all time, likely invented in Mexico in the 1930’s. Margarita means “daisy” in Spanish, so it was probably a spin on the Brandy Daisy (a family of drinks with base liquor, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and soda water). Swap in tequila and lime, and you’ve got a margarita!

You can serve a margarita straight up, or on the rocks in a lowball glass. The ingredients in this basic margarita recipe are:

  • Tequila: A mid-price range tequila blanco is ideal, but you can also make the drink with tequila reposado for more nuanced, smooth flavor notes.
  • Triple Sec or Cointreau: We like a margarita with Cointreau, which adds a sophisticated finish. You can also use Triple Sec, an inexpensive orange liqueur with more straightforward flavor.
  • Lime juice: Always use the juice of fresh limes: bottled just can’t compare to fresh citrus.
Margarita ingredients: tequila and limes with margarita recipe in glass.

Best tequila for margaritas

Many experts say tequila blanco is best for margaritas. Tequila blanco (“new” tequila) is unaged and has that classic burn. However, tequila reposado (aged tequila) adds depth of flavor to this drink. We like this margarita recipe both ways! Here are a few tips for finding the best tequila for margaritas:

  • Any mid-priced tequila tastes great in a margarita. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35.
  • Tequila blanco is ideal for margaritas. It has a straightforward agave-centric flavor and spicy finish. Some brands we like are Espolon Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, Patrón Silver, and Casamigos.
  • Tequila reposado (aged) makes a smooth, sophisticated margarita. Tequila reposado is aged 2 to 12 months in oak barrels. It has a smooth flavor and notes of oak, vanilla, and caramel. Some brands we like include Casamigos, Milagro Reposado, and Suerte Reposado.

How to make a margarita: step by step

The simple margarita recipe is quick and easy: mix it up as a single drink, 2 drinks at once, or make a margarita pitcher. Make sure to prepare the glass rim and garnishes before making the drink. Here’s how to make a single drink (or jump to the recipe):

Step 1: Rim the glass with salt.

Step 1: Add kosher salt to a plate in an even layer, then take a lime wedge and slide it around the rim of the glass. Dip the outside edge of the glass into the salt, rotating until it’s covered.

Step 2: Shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker.

Step 2: Place 1 ½ oz tequila, 1 oz Cointreau and ¾ oz lime juice in a cocktail shaker and add 4 ice cubes. Shake it until the drink is cold.

Step 3: Strain the margarita into the glass and add ice.

Step 3: Strain into the glass. If serving the margarita on the rocks in a lowball or Old Fashioned glass, add clear ice. Serving straight up in a stemmed margarita glass works too.

Tip: Try our Casamigos Margarita or Patron Margarita recipes, each with different types of tequila!

Margarita rim ideas

A salt rim enhances the margarita’s sweet and sour flavors. You can use simple kosher salt or step it up with this colorful margarita salt with lime and orange zest.

Or, try a Tajín rim: it’s a Mexican seasoning blend of chili peppers, lime, and salt that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor.

Quick history of the margarita

🍹 A popular story suggests that the margarita was invented in 1938 by bartender Carlos “Danny” Herrera, head of the restaurant Rancho La Gloria in Tijuana. He claimed he invented the recipe for a customer who wanted a cocktail, but was allergic to all alcohol except tequila.

But a more likely origin could be this story in a 1939 Albuquerque Journal. It suggests an Irish bartender named Madden in Tijuana may have invented the drink as a riff on the brandy Daisy. He accidentally used tequila and created an entirely different drink!

Variation: margarita pitcher

Want to serve this margarita recipe for a crowd? The best way to make multiple margaritas at once is to make a pitcher. The margarita pitcher makes for 8 servings and you don’t need to shake up each drink separately, which is time consuming. Stir ice right into the pitcher to chill and dilute the drink. Here’s what to do:

  • Place 1 ½ cups tequila, 1 cup Cointreau or Triple Sec, and ¾ cup fresh lime juice in a pitcher.
  • Add 3 handfuls ice and stir until cold.
  • Pour into the prepared glasses.

Use clear ice for margarita on the rocks

❄ The best way to make a margarita on the rocks? Use clear ice, artisanal ice that is crystal clear and can be cut into beautiful organic shapes. It’s a great way to take a cocktail from good to glamorous! You can make your own clear ice at home using a small cooler or clear ice tray. Go to How to Make Clear Ice.

Margarita recipe variations

There are many variations on the basic margarita! While the classic simple margarita remains our favorite, there are lots of great ways to mix up the formula. Here are some of our top margarita recipes:

Frequently asked questions

What tequila should I use for the best margarita?

For the most authentic flavor, use a 100% agave tequila. Blanco (silver) tequila is the classic choice, but reposado (aged) tequila can add a smoother flavor profile.

What’s the perfect ratio for a margarita?

A common starting point is the 3:2:1 ratio – 1.5 oz tequila, 1 oz orange liqueur, and ½ oz lime juice. Feel free to adjust these proportions based on your taste preference.

Can I use pre-made sour mix?

While convenient, pre-made sour mix often contains artificial ingredients and added sugar. Fresh lime juice provides the best flavor for a classic margarita.

My margarita is too sour/sweet! How can I adjust it?

Taste your margarita as you go! Adjust the sweetness with agave nectar or simple syrup, and the tartness with fresh lime juice. Start with a small amount of sweetener and add more to taste.

What’s the best way to rim a glass for a margarita?

Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass to moisten it. Dip the rim upside down into a plate filled with coarse kosher salt or another flavored salt of your choice.

How can I make my margarita extra special?

Infuse your tequila: Let fruits, herbs, or spices infuse your tequila for a unique twist.
Get creative with fruits: Muddle fresh fruits like strawberries, mangoes, or peaches for a fruity twist.
Spicy kick: Add a jalapeno slice or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy margarita.

Can I make margaritas ahead of time?

Pre-squeeze your lime juice and prepare any simple syrup in advance. However, assemble and serve margaritas right before drinking for the freshest flavors and perfect consistency (especially for frozen margaritas).

Best tequila for a frozen margarita

One tip: buy a quality tequila for this recipe! Since tequila is the main flavor in this frozen margarita, spending a few extra dollars is worth it for the flavor. Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35.

  • We like using tequila reposado for this recipe. This type of tequila is aged and has a nuanced flavor with vanilla and oak notes. Some brands we like are Casamigos, Milagro Reposado, and Suerte Reposado.
  • Tequila blanco is not aged and has a straightforward flavor. You can use either, but reposado adds the most flavor. Some tequila blanco brands we like are Espolon Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, Patrón Silver, and Casamigos.
