Need a creamy condiment for sandwiches or dipping? Here’s just what you need: mustard sauce! This irresistibly zingy and balanced sauce stars two types of mustard, mayonnaise and honey. It comes together in just 1 minute, and the flavor is divine! Use it for dipping vegetables or wings, or slather it on sandwiches and burgers. It adds a bright pop of flavor to everything it touches and it’s beyond simple to stir together.

Ingredients in mustard sauce

This mustard sauce recipe is so simple and tasty, it’s become one of our “back pocket” recipes that we use in a pinch. It’s perfect for grilled vegetables, fried fish, and burgers, and we can’t get enough of it! Here are the ingredients you’ll need, which you might already have on hand in your refrigerator:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Yellow mustard
  • Honey (or sugar)

Simply mix them together in a bowl until combined: easy as that! Take a taste from the end of the spoon and it’s tangy, savory, a little spicy and sweet all at once.

Dijon vs yellow mustard

For the best flavor, this mustard sauce relies on two types of mustard: Dijon mustard and yellow mustard. Dijon mustard is spicier, with a sharper flavor. Yellow mustard is a bit more mild, but it adds a nice roundness to the flavor and color to this sauce. If you only have one or the other, the sauce will still work! It will taste slightly different, but it works in a pinch.

Varying the sweetness and sweetener

We like honey in this sauce, which makes it almost like a honey mustard sauce recipe. In fact, you can increase the amount of honey as desired to make it sweeter and more honey-forward.

You also can change the sweetener according to your tastes and preferences! The sugar is helpful to make for a balanced flavor. However, you can use less if desired, or use sugar, maple syrup or agave syrup. If you omit the sugar, the sauce will taste very spicy and have a subtle bitter aftertaste.

Storage info

Homemade mustard sauce lasts at least 1 month in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can likely store it for longer, but ours never lasts that long! Mayonnaise remains stable in the refrigerator for months, while mustard can last up to 1 year.

10/10 served it to my family and they loved it with our salmon. My daughter usually refuses to eat fish of any kind but she loved it with this sauce!
